Jordan's National Tourism Strategy 2004 -2010

Tourism plays a vital role in Jordan's economy. It stands as the country's fastest growing industry and is the largest contributor to the Kingdom's gross domestic product (GDP) and tax revenue. It is also the country's second largest contributor to foreign exchange, surpassed only by workers' remittances.

Recognizing tourism's potential to improve the long-term economic and social well-being of Jordanians, industry leaders worked hand-in-hand with government to develop the National Tourism Strategy 2004-2010. More than 100 industry leaders, public sector representatives, and non-governmental organizations developed the strategy, which aims to expand employment, entrepreneurial opportunity, social benefits, industry profits, and state revenue. The National Tourism Strategy (NTS) was endorsed by the Cabinet of Ministers and launched by His Majesty King Abdullah II at the 2004 World Economic Forum.

The NTS is creating a sustainable industry through government facilitation, investment and private-public sector partnership to benefit citizens across the Kingdom. Its four components take a comprehensive approach to develop the industry by:

- Strengthening tourism marketing
- Supporting product development
- Developing human resources
- Providing an effective institutional and regulatory framework

Strategy Goals by 2010

The goal of the National Tourism Strategy is to double the tourism economy by 2010 and:

- Contribute JD 1.9 billion to GDP
- Generate JD 408 million in tax revenue
- Support 308,000 jobs nationally
