Better information to improve Petra tourism experience
To improve information available in Petra and enrich the tourism experience, the USAID/Jordan Tourism Development Project is supporting the Petra Archaeological Park (PAP) Authority to develop attractive and informative signs, which will be placed along the main routes inside the ancient city. A total of 43 signs are being developed for key monuments and features in Petra to give visitors an idea about the history, culture and practices of the fascinating Nabataean civilization that built this amazing rose-red city.
The PAP Authority, along with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Department of Antiquities are all involved in the project, which is being coordinated by the USAID Tourism Project II. Producing this initial batch of 43 signs is the first phase in the implementation of the PAP Interpretive Plan, a detailed plan that was developed for the park under the first USAID tourism project to improve interpretation in Petra. The interpretive plan includes methods and guidelines for implementing projects and initiatives that will result in providing visitors with information they need to experience the site in a safe, enjoyable, educational and sustainable way.
In the next implementation phases, which are due to take place over the next six months), additional interpretive signs will be developed to cover all monuments of significance in Petra. In addition, directional and safety signs and orientation signs that highlight the services provided at the site will be developed and installed. All these will serve to improve the experience and facilitate tourists’ movement through Petra.
It is anticipated that the signs will be ready and set up in Petra within the coming three months. |
