Environmental Specialist
The candidate will manage initiatives promoting adoption of environmental best practices within the tourism and hospitality industry to achieve responsible tourism. Additionally, the specialist will ensure compliance with USAID’s Environmental Procedures of projects implemented directly or by beneficiaries through grants and subcontracts as well as with Jordanian environmental regulations.
Job Responsibilities:

Apply internal environmental screening system to ensure compliance of all project activities. Maintain an environmental monitoring system for continued compliance.

Support hotels and restaurants adopt good environmental practices, including water-saving practices, optimal energy management practices, and waste reduction practices.

Support the upgrade of environmental performance of campsites and eco-lodges.

Promote environmental sustainability through eco-certification by investigating and introducing (as appropriate) eco-certification schemes for the industry, and building capacities of local organizations as certifiers and supporting industry comply with the requirements of the certification scheme.

Coordinate and identify partnership opportunities with other donor projects, international NGOs, research institutions, and governmental-run programs that provide synergies with the objectives of JTDII towards achieving responsible tourism.

Knowledge transfer to partners’ projects in managing an environmental impact process and achieving clearance, as required by the Jordanian Regulation for EIA No. 37.

Support integration of ‘responsible tourism’ in hospitality education.

Manage information dissemination and improved awareness of proper environmental practices and responsible tourism through a variety of campaigns, media channels and training activities.
Education and experience

B.Sc. in environmental science or a related field. Masters degree preferred

At least 5 years of environmental management experience, and first-hand experience in carrying out environmental impact assessments, environmental audits, and/or experience with environmental management systems, with a special focus on private enterprises.

Knowledge of Jordanian regulations governing environmental compliance. Knowledge of USAID environmental regulations is a plus.

Familiarity with environmental issues facing tourism and hospitality sector.

Excellent planning, writing and reporting and teamwork skills.
